    beauty or the beast

FINALLY, someone wrote in Her World magazine the down sides of the Miss Singapore Universe pageant. It's about time we face the facts. I am sick of reading in the newspapers & magazines, fake sentences that make people chuckle instead of nod. 'Beauty with brains', 'The beautiful contestants'...yadda yadda. Yes, I'm chuckling already.

It's ok to have a local pageant if the purpose of that competition was just to have fun. However, it has always intrigued me that one of those sticks walking on stage will be chosen to represent the whole COUNTRY for the Miss Universe International pageant. Are they really serious? Almost every year, the winner will be an average-looking girl with a flat chest & butt, no waistline, limp hair, flat nose, tiny eyes, no lips...and worst of all, the ones that can't even speak English properly.

Come on! I see better-looking girls along Orchard Road. Why aren't these girls in the pageant? Because here in Singapore, the beautiful ones are contented with their looks and seek no further recognition. It's the clowns who join these pageants, either thinking that they're beautiful, or wanting to boost their self-esteem. So of course the winner will be a clown too. It's a sad situation, if you ask me. Even my brother, who was only 16 when he asked this question, "Why aren't the beautiful girls in the pageant and only the ugly ones are?", have lost what little interest he had in the competition which is supposed to be an eye-candy fest.

My colleagues who were looking at pictures on the official website of Miss Universe International 2005(by the way, the title goes to the beautiful Miss Canada, Natalie Glebova), were shaking their heads and even laughing in disgust when comparing pictures of Miss Singapore to the other contestants. I wonder of Miss Singapore herself is aware of this?

Change the techniques; go scouting for beautiful girls around the country; increase the standards(for e.g. body measurements, height) - nothing would be too much if we could find a Miss Singapore who deserves to be at least in the top 10. Until then, I wish the girls would actually look into a mirror first before deciding to take part in a beauty pageant. After all, it IS a BEAUTY pageant. Sure, beauty may be in the eye of the beholder...but majority still wins, eh?

Countdown to a new beginning all over again:
